Godspell (Youth Version) PDF Print E-mail
Written by Administrator
Saturday, 21 January 2012 09:24

Told almost entirely in song, Godspell presents the gospel of St. Matthew updated to New York City of the late '60s/early '70s, featuring Jesus Christ as a wandering minstrel dressed like a circus clown. By blowing on an instrument that reaches only the ears of a select few around the bustling city, John the Baptist summons nine simpatico hippies to a fountain in Central Park, where they revel in the waters of their baptism. When Christ joins the group, the free-flowing fraternal love solidifies into a desire to spread the word of God around the city. Outfitting themselves in a nearby junkyard that bursts with color, the lively group makes its way around a sparsely populated fairy-tale version of the city, re-enacting Biblical parables with great enthusiasm and flamboyance. Houston Center Stage will be performing Godspell at Applause Theatre from March 1-4, 2012.

Combining a spy thriller with farcical comedy and ingenious theatrical invention, The 39 Steps is an engaging, fast-paced whodunit that celebrates the magic of theater. Closely following the storyline of Alfred Hitchcock’s 1935 film, the play features more than 150 characters brought to life by a cast of just four actors: the intrepid hero Richard Hannay; all female roles (including a beautiful spy with a deadly secret) are played by one actor; plus two other male comedians – all putting their many sidesplitting skills to the test in this wildly entertaining experience. See The 39 Steps at Houston Facmily Arts Center from April 13- 29, 2012.

Saying Goodbye to a Friend PDF Print E-mail

Rob Sisco passed away this Saturday, September 10, 2011 early in the morning due to unknown causes.  He had just relocated to Seattle and had started a new job as a software developer with Tecplot.

Rob was not an actor.  However, he would help backstage, usher, sweep, mop, fix props - whatever needed to be done.  He did not do it for the love of theatre but for the love of his friends.  He was generous with his time and money.  He would drive 2 hours to help out even though he had homework due for his graduate classes.  His dry sense of humor got him quizzical looks now and then but it was his trademark.

He was one of the smartest people I ever knew.  No one had a grasp of engineering or science fundamentals like he did.  Don't get him started on a whiteboard.  You could be there for hours - especially if it involved chemistry.

Rob was from Massachsetts but he got to Texas as soon as he could.  He used to rail about Texas politics, Texas weather, and Texas idiosyncrasies.  However, when he was reassigned to a project in Australia, he quit his job to come back to Houston to be with his friends.

Rob was a connoisseur of food and drink.  If you ever needed a suggestion he usually had 5 or 10 places to fit your need.  He introduced me to the Chocolate Bar. If heaven smells like chocolate, Rob is probably there now. Most of all, Rob was a fierce friend.  We will miss you.

More Memories from 2010 PDF Print E-mail

The Bucks County Playhouse in New Hope, Pennsylvania, reached the end of an era this Christmas season.  The lender foreclosed on the historic property with over $2.2 million in unpaid debt.  The landmark theater had been on New Hope’s Main Street since 1939.  Its productions put to work well-known actors such as Grace Kelly, Bea Arthur, Colleen Dewhurst, Robert Redford, William Shatner, Leslie Neilsen, Jack Klugman, Walter Matthau, George C. Scott, Liza Minnelli, Don Knotts and John Travolta. It had the premieres of “Harvey,” “Barefoot in the Park” and “Give ’Em Hell Harry.”

The fate of yet another theatre in 2010 is a reminder to all that we must redouble our efforts to support the arts and make them viable by attracting new patrons.

Internationally produced and currently recognized as the three most widely produced comedic playwrights in America - Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope and Jamie Wooten - came to the Crighton for a visit.  These authors are as genuine as their writing.  What a gem!  STAGE RIGHT audiences may recall that our highly popular productions of CHRISTMAS BELLES and SOUTHERN HOSPITALITY presented last season were written by Jones, Hope and Wooten. Additionally, DEARLY BELOVED, which will be presented in April of this year, is also a Jones, Hope & Wooten play and is actually the first part of the hilarious trilogy of the Futrelle sisters of Fayro, Texas.

Look for more southern comedies from this trio to be presented at the Crighton.  Get your tickets online or call the Box Office at 936-441-7469 (SHOW).

Unger and Madison are at it again! Florence Unger and Olive Madison, that is, in Neil Simon's hilarious contemporary comic classic: the female version of The Odd Couple. Instead of the poker party that begins the original version, Ms. Madison has invited the girls over for an evening of Trivial Pursuit. The Pidgeon sisters have been replaced by the two Constanzuela brothers. But the hilarity remains the same.

See The Odd Couple at Playhouse 1960 from January 27-February 12, 2012.

Proposals PDF Print E-mail

Thursday, 22 December 2011 07:13

A nostalgic memory play, Proposals recalls one idyllic afternoon in the summer of 1953, the last time the Hines clan gathers at its retreat in the Poconos. Clemma, the family's housekeeper (and the story's narrator), dreads a visit from the husband who deserted her years before. Burt Hines, a recovering workaholic convalescing from a second heart attack, looks forward to the arrival of the ex-wife he still loves. Burt's daughter Josie has just broken her engagement to Ken, an intense Harvard law student, and she yearns for his buddy Ray, an aspiring writer with whom she had a brief affair. Ray shows up with a striking but dim-witted model on his arm, and a young Miami gangster with a gift for malapropisms adds a note of hilarity to the gathering.

Performances are at Country Playhouse from FEB 24 - MAR 10, 2012.

“When I’m worried and I can’t sleep
I count my blessings instead of sheep
And I fall asleep counting my blessings
When my bankroll is getting small
I think of when I had none at all
And I fall asleep counting my blessings”
- Irving Berlin

As each year comes to a close we reminisce about the good and bad times.  And while we may be able to celebrate what went right, it's always sad to say goodbye to friends.

Charles Williams was a gentle soul who passed away on December 28.  And while he was no stranger to the theatre - both in front and behind the stage - his greatest gift to the theatre community was his unselfish devotion to the craft and to his friends.  Each group he touched - whether the Houston Grand Opera, Country Playhouse, the Players, or any other theatre group - will miss him.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Kidney Foundation or Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.  To read about some of the lives he touched around the country, view the electronic guest book.
