On the second Sunday of every month at 2 p.m. (6 p.m. June through September; there is no tour in December), GHPA presents a docent-guided walking tour of an architecturally and/or historically significant area of Houston.

    Sunday, September 12: The Binz

Join the Walking Tours Program as we explore one of Houston's lesser-known historic neighborhoods, The Binz. The area was developed in the 1910s and grew along with nearby Rice University; several early Rice administrators and professors built their homes here.

The Binz has included the work of some of Houston's most prominent architects, including the Georgian house that Birdsall P. Briscoe designed for businessman and statesman William L. Clayton. In the 1950s, Clayton and his wife deeded the property to the City of Houston for use as a library, and today, the restored home is part of the Clayton Library Center for Genealogical Research.

The neighborhood's pleasant streets appealed to others as well. Architects William Ward Watkin, Alfred C. Finn and Maurice Sullivan all built homes for their families here; unfortunately, only the Sullivan house remains standing today. Among The Binz's other remaining treasures is Houston's first Mormon church: Even though it's no longer used as a church and its origins are hidden by its present use, the Art Deco building remains standing.

Tickets will be sold beginning at 5:30 p.m. (please note the evening tour time for the summer) in front of the Clayton Library, 5300 Caroline St. Admission is $10 per person ($7 for GHPA members and students with valid ID), with a $2 discount for anyone who walks, bikes or takes public transportation to the tour. Free street parking is available in the area, and the tour starting point is a short walk from MetroRail's Museum District station. Reservations are not required. Restrooms will not be available.

If inclement weather threatens on the day of the tour, check the website for up-to-the-minute updates of any tour changes. You can also follow GHPA on Twitter to receive tour updates.

The average life expectancy after being diagnosed with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as "Lou Gehrig's Disease" is 2-5 years. Only about 10 percent of patients are expected to live about 10 years. Fewer than 5 percent are expected to live longer than 20 years with ALS. Our founding President, Wade Simoneaux, is going on 14 years and counting.

Batter up! Join us and help in our quest to find a cure for ALS.

Taking the stage for what’s easily the 100th time in almost as many days, Edwin McCain casually joins his band as they start off another set that’s impossibly tight and laid back at the same time. By the time his vocals kick in, it’s clear that this is no ordinary troubadour on the club circuit. This is Edwin McCain, the voice that is romance incarnate, has launched a thousand marriages and stirred up Southern soul for over 20 years.

For the guy who always dreamed of a life on the road, Edwin’s massive pop hits “I’ll Be” and “I Could Not Ask For More” were like pulling into glamorous, exciting towns along his never-ending tour. They were life changing and sent him off with incredible memories and nifty souvenirs but were always just a part of the journey, not the destination. “I’ve been lucky enough to experience a pretty broad range of stardom, and the lack thereof, throughout my journey as a musician,” he once said with a chuckle. “I’ve been on television shows and won awards, but I’ve also lived in the back of a truck, and I’ve even worked the Drive-Thru at Krispy Kreme singing wedding songs.”

Surprising to him more than anyone else, those very songs have endured beyond all wildest expectations, turning into wedding anthems and misty-eyed soundtracks to countless wedding proposals. Over a million Dr. Phil viewers voted “I’ll Be” as the best wedding song ever written, the New York Times dubbed him the “great American romantic,” and at any given moment on this very day a radio station in America is playing one of his songs. “They’re kind of emotional road maps,” Edwin explains, “and each one, especially if you’re connected to it in some real way, can change and grow and lead you in new directions of thought.” “But the highlight of what I do is playing for and connecting with the people that come out to see me live. The fans - and I hate to call them fans - the friends of music that survive the advertising campaign long enough to understand what music is truly about, and have incorporated my music into their lives to the point where it is are part of their memories and emotions - those are the ones I do it all for."

This philosophy, this innate ability to write songs that somehow every listener claims as their own, is not just reserved for the love songs but also in the soul-drenched party songs that fans fill the clubs to hear. The ones that weave seamlessly in and out of Edwin’s versions of his own personal favorites like the Drifters’ “Some Kind of Wonderful” and the Temptations’ “I Can’t Get Next To You,” his unabashed love for vintage soul is worn on proudly on his guitar strap.

His reverence – and talent - for great songwriting eventually found a partner in fellow tunesmith Maia Sharp. The two have played a musical game of ping pong throughout the years, writing songs for each others’ albums then returning the favor, then back again. Among their favorites are “Say Anything,” which Maia also sings on, and the new “Walk With You.” “When Maia and I decided to write together again,” recalls Edwin, “I said let’s just start out with this song for a friend’s daughter who’s getting married, do a little song not for public consumption, just a nice song he can have for his daughter and a it’ll be a good warm up for us to start writing the ‘real stuff.’”

But “Walk With You” quickly took on a life of its own. “We had one of those ‘wow’ moments,” he continues, “and it sort of grew from that. By the end of the recording session, even the engineer in the studio was tearing up and you can’t get a more jaded guy that the engineer who hears every single song out there.” But the real test was putting it before an audience. “Performing it at the wedding wasn’t a really fair gauge,” McCain admits. “So I started putting it into my touring set list, and was floored when the crowds erupted mid-song. That just doesn’t happen with new songs.” A new classic in the making, “Walk With You” is already looking like a shiny new town beckoning to Edwin on his latest tour.

“It’s not about chart positions or record sales or anything like that,” insists the man with 11 albums, a wall of platinum and gold albums that have sold in the millions, and reams of Top 10, 20 and 40 hits, “it just has to do with people coming together and sharing a moment, that's it. And that’s all I ever wanted to do. I just love that moment in the small club and bar where every single person in there has a moment where it’s silent and they get it and it’s beautiful, that moment where the music that’s coming off the stage is much more than the players and much more than the audience and something happens and you’re sitting there and your hair stands up. That’s it, man. I love it.”

    Harvest Festival in Poland
The biggest annual farmers holiday celebrated as a crowning achievement of their labor and held after all important fieldwork has ended and crops, especially grain crops, have been gathered. It was celebrated in Poland probably as early as 16th century. In Polish the feast is called "Dozynki." Polish land proprietors have organized harvest festivals for their laborers. It was connected with dancing, eating and was kind of being a form of a prize for good performance of their harvest job.

The harvest was a reward for farmers' effort. Human existence depended to great extent on the quantity and quality of the crops gathered. There were also old, archaic and pagan elements present in harvest celebration that are nowadays explained as traces of ancient rituals and sacrifices made for fertility deities. Among the rituals there were practices and habits e.g. connected with the last handful of uncut grain. It was left on the filed for some time after the harvest to retain continuity of grain vegetation and fertility. It was reaped in a very solemn way by the best harvester and then passed over to the most efficient of woman harvesters. Harvest celebration began with weaving of a wreath of the grain left on the field, bunches of rowan berries, nuts, flowers and ribbons.

Harvest wreaths were usually of a shape of a crown or a circle. In the past farmers also put life (or artificial) chickens, ducklings or goslings into their wreaths to provide for future abundant crops and healthy offspring. The best woman reaper with the help of other laborers carried the wreath. They led the procession of solemnly dressed harvesters carrying cleaned and decorated with flowers scythes and sickles on their shoulders. Then the wreath was taken into the church to be blessed and the procession set for the mansion house of the estate or the household of the field's proprietor (the host of harvest festival). Harvesters sang about hardship of their work, about crops and concern for future harvests as well as about wishes for good crops and hope for fun and treat they deserved. The harvest wreath was kept in a barn until the next sowing. As we can see, Polish harvest festival habits are several centuries old and little has changed.

It is still a festival of farmers work and at the same time it has also become a religious festival and thanksgiving to God and Blessed Virgin Mary for successful harvest and crops gathered. Colorful processions with wreaths being placed in churches along with other crops of the soil are still organized. Farmer's pilgrimages to the places of worship have become new tradition. The most popular is the pilgrimage to Jasna Gora in Czestochowa. It is the place of the most celebrated and the biggest Polish harvest festival and pilgrimage. Plenty of people and delegations of farmers from all over Poland participate in the celebration. Everybody is dressed in traditional costume, carrying beautiful wreaths and loafs of bread baked of the present harvest flour. Farmers are sharing this new bread with others, so no one should ever go hungry. Apart from its religious aspect it is also a time for joy, for fun, dancing and singing, for eating and drinking. It still creates an important part of Polish folklore, bringing the past to the present and consolidating the old with the new and thriving with atmosphere of optimism and joy.

Come and join the fun and fellowship in the true spirit of community. ZAPRASZAMY!!

Voices Breaking Boundaries (VBB) presents a VBB Special Fundraiser: Art for Flood Relief - Mothers Who Make Art, 5 - 7:30pm, Sunday, September 19, 2010, in the Eldorado Ballroom (Project Row Houses Campus), 2310 Elgin, Houston, TX 77004. $ pay what you can; 100 % of proceeds will go toward flood relief efforts in Pakistan.

All through the month of August, Pakistan’s River Indus experienced heavy flooding causing more than 1,500 deaths and the displacement of nearly 20 million people along the 800 mile-long riverbank. Even once the water recedes, people in Pakistan will continue to struggle to deal with the heavy loss of lives, agriculture, infrastructure, and growing illnesses.

To provide some relief to the community, VBB is collaborating with organizations around Houston to raise funds towards flood relief efforts in Pakistan. The fundraiser evening, aimed at raising awareness about the situation in Pakistan, features musical and informative videos directly from Pakistan, including video recordings by LAAL, a Pakistani band who just released a new song in honor of those affected by the floods, and audio recordings by Pakistani novelists Mohammed Hanif and Sorayya Khan.

Journalists and artists from India, including Satyen K. Bordoloi and Sandeep Patey, will be sending footage. DJ A/V will spin the discs and videos, and the Pakistani Consul General will be available to answer questions.

As always, VBB will serve food, drinks and there will be an opportunity to mix, mingle and gain more information about the situation in Pakistan. All funds from the evening will go toward Pakistani non-profits, Karachi Relief Trust, Omar Asghar Khan Development Foundation and the Pakistan Medical Association.

Please join us! (If you cannot attend, but would like to still donate, please send a check to VBB – and clearly mark "For Flood Relief").

This event is co-sponsored by FotoFest, Geo TV, Houston Institute for Culture, Houston Peace and Justice Center, MECA and Pacifica Radio KPFT 90.1 FM. Special thanks to Project Row Houses for the use of the Eldorado Ballroom.

Voices Breaking Boundaries presents a VBB Living Room Art production, Women’s Voices: Alice Valdez and Sheema Kirmani - La Voz. Featuring Aisha Gazdar, Vanessa Cerda, Sheherzad Kaleem, Sehba Sarwar, Yunuen Perez Vertti, Gwen Zepeda. 8 pm, Saturday, November 6, 2010. Location: The home of Larissa Lindsay and Stuart Bailey, 1816 Kane, Houston, TX 77007. $ Free.

VBB is an organization that has long recognized and learned from individuals who have taken risks by speaking out. This fall, VBB’s season will kick off with Women’s Voices, a new production from our much-loved living room art series that will take place in a historical 1888 Houston home located in Sixth Ward, just around the corner from the Multicultural Education and Counseling Center for the Arts (MECA).

The show will recognize the services provided by the arts center and the leadership role played by MECA’s Founding Director and latina icon, Alice Valdez, who has given voice to many Houston artists including Gwen Zepeda and Vanessa Cerda, who will both perform at the event. Like all VBB living room art productions, Women’s Voices will parallel issues of Houston neighborhoods with those in Pakistan.

This year, the production will shed light on art and community activism in Pakistan through a documentary by Sheherzad Kaleem about a grassroots Karachi-based arts organization, Tehrik-e-Niswan, led by dancer/actress Sheema Kirmani. Included in the production will be a documentary by Aisha Gazdar about Pakistan’s Women’s Action Forum, a protest group that grew during the 1980s while Pakistan was run under the US supported right-wing military dictatorship of General Zia.

The evening will feature installations by Sehba Sarwar and Yunuen Perez Vertti. Also part of the experience will be an open mic and altar, so all are encouraged to bring words and share altar art.

As always, there will be music, food, drinks, and surprises. Please join us!

This show is cosponsored by Arte Público Press, Geo TV (Pakistan), Houston Institute for Culture, Pacifica Radio KPFT 90.1 FM and Planned Parenthood of the Gulf Coast. The goal of VBB's living room art productions are to continue juxtaposing joys, struggles and successes in the US and in Pakistan.

About VBB’s Living Room Art Productions: Four years ago, under the guidance of VBB artist Oskar Sonnen, VBB began a new series called Living Room Art, an innovative approach designed to bring art directly into residential communities around Houston and beyond. Living Room Art productions are "one night stands,” open to the public and take place in private homes. The goals of Living Room Art are: to bring together disparate neighborhoods and communities; to bring together diverse populations who may not ordinarily go to a gallery/museum; and to address social issues through art.

All VBB Living Room Art shows are theme-based, multidisciplinary, and allow space for spoken word artists, writers, visual artists, performance artists, and musicians, and generally draw audiences ranging from 250-400. The shows are conceived and directed by Founding Director Sehba Sarwar with Yunuen Perez Vertti, Mark Lacy and Eric Hester.

The Slavic Alliance of Houston presents the 47th Sts.Cyril & Methodius Annual Slavic Heritage Festival, Sunday September 26, 2010, 10:00am - 6:00pm, at the Knights of Columbus Hall and Grounds, 607 E. Whitney Drive, Houston TX-77022.

Under the direction and guidance of the Slavic Alliance of Houston, the Slavic communities gather annually to honor Sts. Cyril & Methodius, and to share in the celebration of their Slavic heritage with ethnic foods, singing and dancing. The general public is invited to join in this celebration and to learn about the wonderful histories and culture of the Czech, Croation, Polish and Ukrainian people.

The Ukrainians will serve as the host group for 2010. Three Ukrainian organizations in Houston, the Protection of the Mother of God (Pokrova)Ukrainian Catholic Church; the Ukrainian National Women's League of America, Inc., Branch 118; and the Ukrainian American Cultural Club of Houston are spearheading the preparations for the big day.

A History of the Festival (Slavic brothers sharing their heritage in Houston, Texas):
Rev. Dmytro Blazejovskyj came to the United States in 1946 to organize Ukrainian catholic Churches, mostly in the Western states. In 1957 he became the pastor of St. Pius X Ukrainian Catholic Church in Houston. He served in Houston until 1973, when he was transferred to the Vatican as Church Historian. He is the author of numerous books and articles. Today, this Ukrainian Catholic Church has been renamed Protection of the Mother of God.

While serving in Houston, Rev. Blazejowskyi became well known to his Slavic brothers and sisters. In the absence of a polish-speaking priest, the Polish parishioners of Christ The King Catholic Church requested the services of Rev. Blazejowskyi. He heard their confessions in polish and even went to their homes and administered the sacrament of the Extreme Unction to the very ill.

In 1963, The 1100th anniversary of Sts. Cyril and Methodius was being celebrated by many national groups in the United States. All these celebrations were done by individual groups. As a historian, Rev. Blazejowskyi saw a need for a united rather than divided celebration. He devised a plan and discussed it with the leaders of his Ukrainian parish. They thought it was a good idea. Rev. Blazejowskyi contacted the Polish group associated with the polish Home and Maurice Hafernik of the Czech Group; the three groups met and planned the first celebration. It was decided to hold this celebration on Knights of Columbus property.

All three languages were represented in the celebration of the Mass that has become an integral part of the Festival. Bishop Morkowsky was approached to give the sermon in Czech and take part in the celebration. From that day forward Bishop Morkovsky attended the Slavic Festivals. He would go from booth to booth to visit with everyone. The original three groups in time were joined by the Croatians and the Slovenians. The celebration is now a tradition.

Bishop Morkowsky was a compassionate, caring man with a homespun kind of humor. He was gracious, kind, and able to communicate with people from all walks of life, both economical, social and religious. He enjoyed life and wanted everyone to enjoy it with him. He liked to fish, golf, hunt, garden, travel, plan and attend any kind of gathering of people especially family reunions, singing and playing his harmonica. He enjoyed all kinds of good food, and whenever you would ask him if he was on any kind of special diet, he would always reply : "Oh yes, I can only eat food."

Rev. Dmytro Blazejowskyi was born in Ukraine on Aug. 21, 1910, and was ordained into the priesthood in Rome on April 2, 1939. He received a Ph.D. in Theology in 1942 and a second Ph.D. in Church History in 1946. He speaks English, Ukrainian, Polish, Latin and Italian.

Bishop Morkowsky was born on Aug. 16, 1909, in Praha, Texas; the seventh of ten children. His parents were both Czech and his love for people undoubtedly a result of his heritage. He spoke Czech, Spanish, Italian and Latin and had a reading knowledge of German, French, Portuguese and Polish. He died March 24, 1990

Lisa works by appointment only, so if you'd like to meet with her at PetFest, please call her at 281.497.8073 or email her at lisa@petperceptions.com to schedule your session before the event. Appointments are one hour in length and the fee is $120. Your pets do NOT have to be present for a great reading!

Pick up poop and win a prize!
How often can you potentially win a prize for being a responsible pet owner and picking up your dog's poop?! At PetFest that is actually what could happen. Pick up your dog's waste with your own or one of the poop pick-up bags that will be provided and drop it off at the Call To Doody Dog Waste Removal booth located on Gentry in front of B's Place. The Call To Doody staff will give you a raffle ticket for every bag you drop off. Then drop your raffle ticket in the bag for the prize you would most like to win. Drop off the poop and drop your raffle ticket - now that's a great deal! Winners will be drawn at after 3PM on Sunday, October 24. Need not be present to win.

Prior to the 6th century, other names had been used to reference the Vespers. For example, one name by which it was most widely known during the late 5th and early 6th century was Lucernalis or Lucernaria hora, referencing the infinite light of God as marked by the lighting of the church candles, lamps, and torches.

Ideal for musicians, enthusiasts, and those wanting to learn more about the Opus XIX Pipe Organ on a technical level. Sponsored by the Amercian Guild of Organist.

Pleae email Dr. Crista Miller if you plan on attending the event.

The Opus XIX Pipe Organ is being constructed for the Co- Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, a Parish in the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston. The name for the organ was a result of the naming schema used by Martin Pasi & Associates - as a matter of course, they name each organ “Opus” followed by a numerical designation in order of construction.

The cathedral’s architecture was inspired by the Italian Romanesque style, and designed in cruciform shape with broad transepts at the head of the nave. Designed by world renowened firm Ziegler Cooper, it measures 207 feet long and 181 feet broad at the transepts.

The nave is 72 feet wide and 72 feet tall. Th e dome at the crossing is 117 feet tall. The acoustics are superb for music, with a long but clear reverberation.

The Opus XIX Pipe Organ will be sited in the rear gallery on either side of a monumental stained glass window that is over 30 feet wide. A principal challenge in the construction of the Opus XIX Pipe Organ was the division of the pipes, a feature that is extraordinarily rare in organ design - so much so, that many organ craftsmen will not bid on such a design.

Galveston's Haunted History Comes To Life This October. From its storied harbor to its vault-filled cemeteries to its stately Victorian mansions, historic Galveston is filled with legendary figures and ghostly stories. This October, Galveston Historical Foundation is once again hosting the popular Galveston Haunted Happenings Tours.

Galveston is one of the most haunted cities in America, according to numerous websites, books and “ghost hunters” that track reports of ghostly occurrences. Galveston has been home to the allegedly cannibalistic Karankawa Indians and merciless pirates, including the famous Jean Laffite whose lavish and lawless den of thieves was the island's first European settlement. Galvestonians in the 19th century knew fires, epidemics of yellow fever and malaria, military occupation and bitter war, and of course, storms.

"The Great Storm of 1900, which washed clean of houses great swaths of the island and killed well over 6,000 people, remains the worst natural disaster in American History,” says Dwayne Jones, executive director of Galveston Historical Foundation.

“The organized crime that developed around the seaborne smuggling of liquor during the Prohibition era was supplemented by individualized mayhem and tragedy,” says Jones. “Many, many people have lived and died by these waters, and perhaps some of the dead still reside here. We invite our guests to listen to the stories, and decide for themselves. But you don't have to believe in ghosts to know that the dead are a presence on this island."

During the month of October Galveston’s haunted history will be explored in three series of tours:

ASHTON VILLA’S “ARE WE HAUNTED?” TOURS

    • October 15, 16, 22 and 23, and 29: 5 p.m.
    • October 30 and 31: 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.

Is Ashton Villa haunted by the spirit of “Miss Bettie,” the daughter of the house’s first owner, James Moreau Brown? Maybe. Maybe not. Since 1975, when GHF opened the restored mansion to the public, legends and ghost stories have attached themselves to Ashton Villa. The one-hour “Are We Haunted?” tour of Ashton Villa shows the restoration in progress on the ground floor level, following damage by Hurricane Ike, then explores the undamaged second floor where ghostly memories still reside.

HAUNTED HARBOR TOURS ABOARD SEAGULL II

    • October 15, 16, 22 and 23: 4 p.m.
    • October 29, 30 and 31: 4 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.

For the Haunted Harbor Excursion, the tour relates specifically to the water and waterfront. Trained GHF guides present a fascinating, frightening look at the many tragic events that have occurred in and around Galveston Harbor for their guests aboard the 50-foot passenger boat, Seagull II.

“SPIRITS OF THE PAST” CEMETERY TOURS

    • October 29, 30, 31: 6:30 p.m. and 8 p.m.

The spirits are easy to find at GHF’s “Spirits of the Past” Cemetery Tour. They await discovery at the Broadway Cemetery, located right on the divided boulevard along which presidents, movie stars, oil moguls and millions of ordinary people pass through the rich history that abounds in every neighborhood of the city.

"The markers in these cemeteries can tell stories that textbooks do not," says Denise Alexander, GHF's Director of Heritage Programs. "Each marker is a piece of Galveston and Texas history."

In 1840, the Galveston City Company officially donated blocks between 40th and 42nd streets for the purpose of public burials; other blocks adjacent to the site were soon donated to make up for seven named cemeteries that make up the Broadway Cemetery. The first burial was in October, 1839.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE NEW "SPIRITS OF THE PAST" TOUR -

James B. Magruder (ca. 1810 -1871): Major General Magruder led a combined land and sea operation that successfully returned the City of Galveston to the Confederacy on January 1, 1863.

Perugini Brothers: Frank and Tony Perugini were brothers born on the same date two years apart. They joined the Navy in separate states on the same day, unbeknownst to each other. They both died on the same day in a torpedo gun turret on the cruiser New Orleans during the Battle of the Solomons in World War II.

Alberti Family: Louis G. Alberti operated a butcher shop in Galveston. He and his wife Lizzie became parents of eight children. Two children died of natural causes and four more died on the night of December 4, 1894, after being poisoned by their mother. Eight days later, a court declared her insane and committed Mrs. Alberti to an asylum in San Antonio. Four years later, she died of a morphine overdose and is buried alongside her children.

Tickets for all the “Haunted Happenings” tours are available at GHF’s website: www.galvestonhistory.org. Adult prices are $20 for Ashton Villa, $15 for Haunted Harbor; and $12 for Haunted Cemetery. For more information, call GHF at 409-765-7834.

The 32nd Annual Festa Italiana will bring Italian culture to life Friday to Sunday, October 15 to 17 on the grounds of the University of St. Thomas.

With excitement, Jo Ann Pinkerton, 32nd Festa Italiana Chair, announced, “We have made several new and wonderful additions to our annual festival! Look for the Taste of Italy Pavilion where several exceptional Houston chefs will offer food demonstrations, there will be wine tastings headed by Phillip Cusimano and each evening wine and cheese tastings will take place. Because of your requests, Aaron Caruso, the young charasmatic tenor, will again be the headliner for the 2010 Festa Italiana.”

The chefs to be part of the Taste of Italy Pavilion will include: Chef Maurzio Ferrarese of Quattro Restaurant at the Four Seasons Hotel and he will demonstrate and offer for tasting Risotto; and Chef Giancarlo Ferrara of Arcordo will show how to make Coppino seafood stew …both on Saturday while on Sunday Chef Rinato DePirro of the Granduca Hotel and Restaurant will present Tiramisu. All three of these demonstrations must have reservations and will require a fee.

The Wine tastings to be headed by Cusimano will be held on Friday from 5:30 until 6:15 p.m. and again on Saturday from 5:00 until 5:45 p.m. Reservations are required for these Introduction to Italian Wine sessions along with a fee. An added feature on Friday and Saturday from 7 until 9:00 p.m. in the Taste of Italy Pavilion will be a Lombardian wine and cheese tasting where you will have an opportunity to meet the winemakers and purchase the wines.

Three producers of the wines to be tasted during the Lombardian tasting will be attending the three day festival. They are Andrea Doria, who runs the Azienda Agricola Doria winery which has been producing excellent wines since the mid 1800s; Mauro Treavisani, owner with brother Gian, of Trevisani located on beautiful Lake Garda; and Paolo Milani, who is export director of Consorzio Selezione Vini Italiani. These three will be able to share their passion and love of Lombardian wines with all who join them in the Taste of Italy Pavilion. A fee and reservations are required for these two sessions.

“We were so pleased to be able to arrange for Aaron Caruso to be back with us at the festival. He was so well received by the audiences last year and he was excited to be able to come back to Festa Italiana, as well,” stated Pinkerton.

A strong believer in promoting his rich Italian heritage, Aaron was featured on the Red Carpet event on NBC for the Columbus Day Parade. Having headlined Italian festivals in such cities as New York, Boston, Milwaukee, Seattle and many more, arrangements have been made for Aaron to be featured on Friday and Saturday evenings backed by a band of musicians from Houston.. The young tenor has been the opening act for such names as The Smothers Brothers, The Gaylords, Don Rickles and Johnny Maestro. Jerry Vale said of Caruso, who sang for his birthday party, “ This kid is amazing.”

“You will want to catch all of Aaron’s passion and romantic melodies during the three day festival, “ explained Pinkerton.

Other features of Festa Italiana will include the dancing of the Tarantella Dancers, many activities for the children including their favorite , the Marionette Puppets, the Pasta Eating contests and the Grape Stomping on Saturday and Sunday, Remember to watch the young high school artists as they compete in the Fourth Annual I Madonnari Sidewalk Colored Chalk Art contest all day on Saturday and come on Sunday to hear the talented song competion during the 3rd Annual Italian-American Idol Song contest to be held on the Main Stage on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. sponsored by Radio Station KRBE 104.l FM. Visit the more than 30 exhibitors who will line the beautiful tree covered campus showing off their products from clothing, jewelry to art work.

“And what would an Italian Festival be without the wonderful Italian Cuisine made by the ladies and gentlemen of the Federation of Italian-American Organizations of Greater Houston. The aromas of all the foods and desserts will mingle as you enter the grounds at the University of St. Thomas. We have everything from stuffed artichokes, pizza, Italian green beans, chicken marsala to sfingis (Italian Donuts) to biscotti and expresso…so come join us as to take you on a trip to the Sunny shores of Italy… all for only $6 for adults and children 12 and under are free! Join us…we look forward to greeting you!”

The proceeds of Festa Italiana 32 benefit the Italian Cultural and Community Center (ICCC) and all the programs provided for the Houston community. The hours for the festival are Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. until 10 p.m. and from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Sunday. Facilities, children's activities, Athenian playground & seating capacity have also been expanded. OPA!!

For decades now, Houston residents have turned out to partake of Greek culture and tradition. This four-day festival boasts a busy slate of live music, Greek folk dancing and authentic Greek food. Feast on the most delicious Greek cuisine this side of the Aegean prepared by community parishioners from recipes handed down over the centuries. Whatever you do, make sure not to miss the pastries!

Children's activities make sure everyone in the family is accommodated, and a free shuttle helps take the hassle out of parking.

Presale tickets include admission to the festival and a dinner plate; a gift shop and cathedral tours are also available.

The Greek Festival, held on the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral campus each year during October, is said to be one of the largest festivals of its kind in the United States. It originated in 1967 as "Greek Night," held in celebration of the Cathedral’s 50th anniversary. The following year saw the institution of an annual Festival to celebrate Greek culture, food and Orthodox life. Today, the Festival draws some 40,000 visitors over a period of four days, and is one of the tourist attractions of the Houston area.

Proceeds from the Greek Festival have helped many people through donations to various charitable organizations, such as Children's Assessment Center, S.E.A.R.C.H., the Women's Home, Covenant House, Texas Emergency Aid Coalition (EAC), and the Star of Hope Mission.

ScreamWorld 2010 offers three haunted houses and two outdoor attractions that are over-flowing with the most bizarre and morbid visions, both from the past and future. Combining Hollywood special effects and a cast of highly trained “monsters”, ScreamWorld is the only haunted attraction that will attack all five senses---you’ve been warned!

Although ScreamWorld is entering its 10th season, the creator, Jim Getterly, has been haunting the greater Houston area since 1989. ScreamWorld operated three haunted attractions near downtown Houston for 12 years called the Haunted Hotel, the Haunted Zone in 3D, and the Fear Factory

After 12 years of leasing old buildings with customers waiting in lines on sidewalks, ScreamWorld wanted to take Houston's best haunted attractions to the next level, and at the same time remove the one customer complaint that haunted for years -- " we like going to mulitple haunted attractions, but we don't like waiting in line at each attraction."

Purchasing their own land and building a new facility enabled ScreamWorld to take the haunted attraction industry to the next level in Houston, and put all their attractions under one roof. The haunted attractions are designed one after the other with signage letting customers kow they are moving from one attraction to another.

All the haunts are very different; the Haunted Hotel is considered the most hi-tech haunted attraction in Houston with very elaborate scenes and numerous animatronics. The Edge of Darkeness is a traditional style haunt, with long twisting patheways and calssic scare tactics. New for 2010 is Jake's Slaughterhouse, a visually stunning attraction complete with slaughtered beef, gutted hogs, skinned animals, rotting carcasses, and human remains.

There are also two outdoor attractions, the Maze of Maniacs and the all new Psycho Path.

ScreamWorld now has 5 haunted attractions at one location for one price. Oh, and ScreamWorld has one line for all the attractions so customers don't waste several hours standing in line!

ScreamWorld has been selected by America's Best Haunts in 2007, 2008, and 2009 as one of the best haunted attractions in the United States.

Who doesn’t love a good bowl of gumbo? Visitors can sample gumbo from professional cooking teams as part of the inaugural Galveston Island Shrimp Festival. Shrimp Festival activities begin on Friday, Sept. 24 and continue through Sunday, Sept. 26. Events include a 5K run/walk, gumbo cook off, children’s parade, merchant walkabout and bicycle ride followed by a tailgate party. Gumbo lovers can sample and judge wild shrimp gumbo prepared by area restaurants participating in the professional category.

"We invite not only our local residents but all Texans to join us in celebrating the return of Galveston Island from Hurricane Ike and take this opportunity to honor the shrimp industry in Texas,” says Mike Dean, president of Yaga's Entertainment, Inc., a local events company. "We plan on making this festival one of the largest shrimp festivals on the Gulf Coast in the years to come."

This year, the festival will limit the number of participating teams to 100 including 20 teams designated to Gulf Coast area restaurants and Texas Department of Agriculture's GO TEXAN Program members. All shrimp in the contest must be wild Texas shrimp. Attendees will taste and vote on the best shrimp gumbo of the twenty restaurants. The best in the amateur category will be decided by a panel of judges. The winning amateur team will be honored by having their championship gumbo on the menu of Yaga's Cafe in Galveston for one year. Other gumbo categories include chicken and sausage, shrimp bisque and an open division.

A limited number of Texas wineries will offer wine samples to festival attendees. "We are focusing on bringing Texas wineries to the festival as well as Texas artisans so we can showcase Texas only products,” notes Dean. “All exhibitors will have to qualify as GO TEXAN members to participate in the event.”

    • Friday, Sept. 24, 8pm - 10pm: Cook off Team and Sponsor Party

The Jung Center of Houston presents Great Conversations: What Matters Most , Wednesday, September 29. This special evening benefiting The Jung Center features James Hollis and J. Pittman McGehee exploring what it means to live a fulfilling life.

Why are we here? What is the meaning of our existence? Where did I lose the trail? Can I find my way back? If we do not engage in dialogue with these questions that emerge from our depths, then we will live an unconscious, unreflective, accidental life. Beginning with these insistent questions, two of Houston’s most thoughtful teachers explore a fresh concept of a fulfilling life–one that embraces growth over security, engagement versus avoidance, and a recognition that the forces in our lives, far from being accidental, are the heat, the cold, the pressure that temper us into a looking glass through which we can see into the heart of what matters…what really matters.

James Hollis, PhD, is a Jungian analyst, author of more than a dozen books, and director emeritus of The Jung Center. He is Director of Jungian Studies at Saybrook Graduate School in San Francisco and lectures internationally on depth psychology.

    J. Pittman McGehee, MDiv, is a Jungian analyst, author, poet and director of the Institute for the Advancement of Psychology and Spirituality. Formerly the Dean of Christ Church Cathedral, Pittman is widely known as a lecturer and educator in the field of psychology and religion.

    Admission:
Free and open to the public

    Start Time(s):
7pm-10pm

Contemporary artist Nestor Topchy’s Iconic Portrait Strand will be on exhibition Saturday, September 11, 2010, at Geo. H. Lewis & Sons Funeral Directors, Ten Ten Bering Drive in Houston, from 7 p.m. until 10 p.m. The one-night-only event is open to the public and offered free of charge.

This exhibition is the first public presentation of more than 100 portraits depicting notables of the art world, among others, and is the beginning of an ongoing word-of-mouth project to depict colleagues, family, and friends in 800-year-old Byzantine tradition. The unusual setting for the exhibition was conceived in part as a symbol that people are forever present in their portraits, that art transcends death and even time.

To create each portrait, Mr. Topchy draws his subjects, sittings that last only a few minutes. The transformation into a final artwork, utilizing ancient techniques and materials such as mineral pigments and gold leaf over cloth on wood, takes months to complete. The strand has been years in the making.

American writers Edward Albee and Elizabeth McBride sat for Mr. Topchy and are depicted in the portrait stand, as are artists Rick Lowe, Mary Ellen Carroll, Fernando Casas, Rahul Mitra, Terrell James, Bert Long, Forrest Prince, David Magee, Aaron Parazette, Bill Davenport, Sharon Engelstein, Michael Galbreth, Jack Massing, Molly Gochman, Paul Kittelson, Arielle Masson, Basilios Poulos, Dean Ruck, George Smith and many others.

A number of museum directors and curators have participated in the project, including Josef Helfenstein, Bill Arning, Toby Kamps, Franklin Sirmans, and Alison De Lima Greene.

Gallery directors, owners and art promoters, including Hiram Butler, James Harithas, Jimbo Pirtle, Michael Peranteau and Clint Willour also have portraits in the exhibition.

Each portrait in the strand is painted on a deme shaped board, the special dimensions taken from a sacred geometrical system. While each picture in the strand is unique, together they comprise a corpus and will continue to do so while members are added over the years.

Click here for a complete list of participants in the portrait strand.

Music for the exhibition has been specially created and will be performed by Chicago musician/composer/arranger Scott Stevenson, and will reflect the ancient and timeless aspects of the strand. Mr. Stevenson’s previous works have ranged from choral cantatas and orchestral tone poems to jazz and other original work. He also is an accomplished classical organist.

While many of the strand participants have histories in Texas, Iconic Portrait Strand includes notables from the world over, including New York City, where the next phase of the exhibition is being planned.

This event would not be possible without the very generous support of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons Funeral Directors in the Tanglewood-Uptown Park area of Houston. All catering has graciously been underwritten and will be provided by The Stone Kitchen Catering & Special Events of River Oaks in Houston.

Mr. Topchy is a 2010 recipient of an Artadia Award and has shown his works at numerous museums, galleries and shows around the world. His next exhibition will be in March 2011 in Kiev, Ukraine. View www.nestortopchy.com for more information.

The Houston Museum of Natural Science presents a Cultural Feast Dinner - Eat, Drink, and Plunder! A Pirate Feast, Sunday, October 31, 7 p.m. Hosted aboard the Elissa docked at Galveston Island.

Pirate-themed cuisine, tales of eating and drinking during the Golden Age of Piracy, and the berthed tall ship Elissa combine to create a unique Cultural Feast. In addition to learning how pirates provisioned their ships and what they ate and drank on board, we will explore the historical and archaeological evidence for many new, more appetizing, theories associated with pirates from a culinary perspective. Pirates influenced the evolution of the rum trade in the Caribbean, operated food production centers, and often selected their sea routes for plundering based on season and the availability of food.

Participants will meet at Elissa at Pier 21 on Galveston Island. A map and directions will be sent prior to the dinner. The Texas Seaport Museum will also be open for participants to tour this evening. Advance ticket purchases is required.

As if Halloween isn't reason enough to dress up as a pirate, here’s another.
