RealFilms presents the documentary Butte, America, Saturday, October 2, 2010. Director Pamela Roberts Reception: 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm. Screening Time: 8:00 pm - 9:00 pm. Q&A: 9:00 pm - 9:30 pm.
Butte, America recounts the sometimes glorious, often sorrowful, story of the most lucrative hard rock mining town in United States history, "the Richest Hill on Earth," "the town that plumbed and electrified America," the Pittsburgh of the West. In Butte, the Industrial Revolution collided with the romance of the frontier, corporate capitalism battled organized labor, and human appetite laid waste to land and water, yielding vast fortunes for a few and a tragic environmental legacy for the people left behind.
Those people are the heart of the film–miners, their families, the working class neighborhoods they created amidst danger and hardship. In a copper crucible, they forged a community whose toughness and solidarity speak to what's missing in America today.
Butte, America combines historic fact and first-person narrative to bring to life the highly compelling, but largely untold, story of this legendary city.
About The Director:
Pamela Roberts came to filmmaking as a social issue medium after graduating with honors from the University of Southern California with a masters degree in social work. She co-founded Rattlesnake Productions, Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation dedicated to producing educational film and media projects that provide students, teachers, and the public with a greater appreciation of Western history and culture.
Over the past 24 years Roberts has produced and directed award-winning documentary films and videos for public television and national and international theatrical and video distribution. These include Backbone of the World: the Blackfeet, broadcast nationally on public television and WorldLINK TV; Ishi, the Last Yahi, a one-hour documentary nominated for an Emmy Award by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, and broadcast nationally on American Experience; and Contrary Warriors: A Story of the Crow Tribe, nationally broadcast on A&E and PBS and winner of the John Grierson Award for Best Film for First Time Director.
Roberts recently produced and directed Butte, America. An accompanying multimedia outreach program, About PLACE! (People, Land and Community Engagement), designed to explore Butte’s industrial aftermath, will be distributed to schools in post-industrial communities within the Clark Fork Watershed and Columbia River Basin.

Voices Breaking Boundaries presents a VBB Living Room Art production, Women’s Voices: Alice Valdez and Sheema Kirmani - La Voz. Featuring Aisha Gazdar, Vanessa Cerda, Sheherzad Kaleem, Sehba Sarwar, Yunuen Perez Vertti, Gwen Zepeda. 8 pm, Saturday, November 6, 2010. Location: The home of Larissa Lindsay and Stuart Bailey, 1816 Kane, Houston, TX 77007. $ Free.
VBB is an organization that has long recognized and learned from individuals who have taken risks by speaking out. This fall, VBB’s season will kick off with Women’s Voices, a new production from our much-loved living room art series that will take place in a historical 1888 Houston home located in Sixth Ward, just around the corner from the Multicultural Education and Counseling Center for the Arts (MECA).
The show will recognize the services provided by the arts center and the leadership role played by MECA’s Founding Director and latina icon, Alice Valdez, who has given voice to many Houston artists including Gwen Zepeda and Vanessa Cerda, who will both perform at the event. Like all VBB living room art productions, Women’s Voices will parallel issues of Houston neighborhoods with those in Pakistan.
This year, the production will shed light on art and community activism in Pakistan through a documentary by Sheherzad Kaleem about a grassroots Karachi-based arts organization, Tehrik-e-Niswan, led by dancer/actress Sheema Kirmani. Included in the production will be a documentary by Aisha Gazdar about Pakistan’s Women’s Action Forum, a protest group that grew during the 1980s while Pakistan was run under the US supported right-wing military dictatorship of General Zia.
The evening will feature installations by Sehba Sarwar and Yunuen Perez Vertti. Also part of the experience will be an open mic and altar, so all are encouraged to bring words and share altar art.
As always, there will be music, food, drinks, and surprises. Please join us!
This show is cosponsored by Arte Público Press, Geo TV (Pakistan), Houston Institute for Culture, Pacifica Radio KPFT 90.1 FM and Planned Parenthood of the Gulf Coast. The goal of VBB's living room art productions are to continue juxtaposing joys, struggles and successes in the US and in Pakistan.
About VBB’s Living Room Art Productions: Four years ago, under the guidance of VBB artist Oskar Sonnen, VBB began a new series called Living Room Art, an innovative approach designed to bring art directly into residential communities around Houston and beyond. Living Room Art productions are "one night stands,” open to the public and take place in private homes. The goals of Living Room Art are: to bring together disparate neighborhoods and communities; to bring together diverse populations who may not ordinarily go to a gallery/museum; and to address social issues through art.
All VBB Living Room Art shows are theme-based, multidisciplinary, and allow space for spoken word artists, writers, visual artists, performance artists, and musicians, and generally draw audiences ranging from 250-400. The shows are conceived and directed by Founding Director Sehba Sarwar with Yunuen Perez Vertti, Mark Lacy and Eric Hester.

In commemoration of the second anniversary of Hurricane Ike, The Grand 1894 Opera House will present an encore showing of the nationally-acclaimed production IKE: A Documentary on Monday, September 13. The performance is free to the public and will be presented at 7pm.
“IKE: A Documentary – The Story of a Torn City Rebuilt by Everyday Heroes” was produced and presented by Robert Weiss and The Hurricane Story Tellers in association with Ball High School and Galveston ISD. Just seven months after Ike devastated Galveston Island, Weiss’ Ball High Advanced Media Technology Class created and dedicated a story of hope to the island –with all proceeds from contributions dedicated to the Galveston ISD Educational Foundation.
“We started out the project with the intention of giving back to the community, but I was surprised to see how the students were healing their own pain through making this film”, Weiss noted. “And the students certainly found a stronger connection to the community of Galveston.”
The students – aka “Hurricane Story Tellers” combed the island and interviewed/photographed residents who rode out the storm; those who lived in “Tent City’, as well as talking with volunteers and city leaders working to aid in the recovery.
Executive producer was Robert Weiss; producers – Heather Weiss and Aaron Weiss. Lead interviewer was Jennifer Willcut; director of photographer was Rafael Lazo, with additional footage by Natalie Martin, William Gomez, and Melnikia Smith. Narration and essay was by Mamie Aoughsten; marketing and research by Austin Almanza and Jovanna Torres.

The Princess Bride
by Rob Reiner
Based on William Goldman's novel of the same name, The Princess Bride is staged as a book read by grandfather (Peter Falk) to his ill grandson (Fred Savage). Falk's character assures a romance-weary Savage that the book has much more to deliver than a simpering love story, including but not limited to fencing, fighting, torture, death, true love, giants, and pirates.
Indeed, The Princess Bride offers a tongue-in-cheek fairy tale depicting stable boy-turned-pirate Westley's journey to rescue Buttercup (Robin Wright), his true love, away from the evil prince (Chris Sarandon), whom she had agreed to marry five years after learning of what she had believed to be news of Westley's death.
With help from Prince Humperdinck's disgruntled former employee Miracle Max (Billy Crystal), swordsman Inigo Montoya (Mandy Patinkin), and a very large man named Fezzik (Andre the Giant), the star-crossed lovers are reunited.

Spellbound
by Alfred Hitchcock
Dr. Edwards (Gregory Peck) arrives at the Green Manors Mental Asylum and falls for the beautiful Dr. Petersen (Ingrid Bergman). But she discovers that he's a paranoid amnesiac impostor, which leaves her wondering: What happened to the real Dr. Edwards? Based on Francis Beeding's novel The House of Dr. Edwardes, Spellbound -- which was nominated for six Oscars and won for Best Original Score -- is one of Alfred Hitchcock's finest films. The Manchurian Candidate (pictured - Angela Lansbury and Laurence Harvey)
by John Frankenheimer
Raymond Shaw (Laurence Harvey) is a Korean War hero with a lethal secret: He's been brainwashed by the communist Chinese. With one phone call, the Reds can transform Shaw into a deadly assassin -- unless fellow veteran Bennett Marco (Frank Sinatra) can stop them first. Some thrillers remain as suspenseful -- and timely -- as when they were first released, and this classic from director John Frankenheimer is one of the best. (Excerpt from Netflix)

Russian Ark
by Alexander Sokurov
Russian filmmaker Alexander Sokurov broke boundaries with his dreamlike vision of the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, Russian Ark. It's the first feature-length narrative film shot in a single take (on digital video, using a specially designed disc instead of tape). Russian Ark is shot from the point-of-view of an unseen narrator, as he explores the museum and travels through Russian history. The film was obviously shot in one day, but the cast and crew rehearsed for months to time their movements precisely with the flow of the camera while capturing the complex narrative, with elaborate costumes from different periods, and several trips out to the exterior of the museum. Tilman Büttner, the director of photography, was responsible for capturing it all in one single Steadicam shot. (Excerpt from allmovie.com)

RUNTIME: 96 min
September 30 - In the Realm of Dreams
Syndromes and a Century
by Apichatpong Weerasethakul
An abstract drama told in two parts, this Thai film uses poignant and humorous memories from the director's childhood to simply evoke emotions as well as tell the story of his parents' budding relationship. Though the settings of each part are similar, one centers on a woman physician at a small clinic, and the other on a male doctor at a metropolitan hospital, and both include semblances of his parents' courtship. Big Trouble in Little China
by John Carpenter
Although it represents one of cult director John Carpenter's most underrated and under-appreciated movies, his homage to Hong Kong cinema, "Big Trouble In Little China" has an incredibly committed fan following.
Jack Burton (Kurt Russell) is a truck-driver with a fast mouth. Finally back home, after a long tour, he plays a game of Mahjong with some of his friends in Chinatown and... wins! Sadly, his buddy Wang Chi (Dennis Dun) can't pay up immediately, though, and to top things off, he asks Jack for a favor, before going to pick up the money. His fiancé is arriving from mainland China, and Wang wants to pick her up at the airport. But before they can meet Miao Yin (Suzee Pai), she is kidnapped by members of a street gang. Jack and Wang are determined to rescue here and enter the lion's den, deep in the heart of Chinatown. Suddenly, they find themselves head over heels in the middle of a gang war that rages openly in the back alleys of Chinatown. To make things worse, out of the blue, three ethereal warriors appear. Seemingly indestructible, Wang and Jack barely manage to escape the massacre, only to run into Lo Pan (James Hong), a mythical man, who is believed to have lived for 200 years under a curse of eternal life!
It is Lo Pan who had Miao Yin kidnapped for her green eyes. To lift his curse, he needs the green-eyed girl to marry him, and to sacrifice her to placate the God responsible for his torment. All of this Chinese mythology and supernaturalism is way over Jack Burton's head and he has his own way of dealing with ancient myths, legends and demons... and yet, even he needs the help of Egg Shen (Victor Wong), a local small-time sorcerer, as he soon finds out.
"Big Trouble In Little China" is full of great moments and the fact that the film doesn't take itself too seriously, only adds to the flavor of the movie. However, you definitely need the right mindset for this flick. It is not a real martial arts film, and it is not a straight-comedy or a pure action film either. It is an amalgam of all these elements, spiced up with a lot of love for Hong Kong cinema. Some things in the film are really far out, but to me, it is what makes it such a charming and unique experience. The characters are very intriguing, the dialogues witty and humorous, the story propels itself forward at a good pace and the beautiful cinematography is among the best of all of John Carpenter's movies.
Sadly, the movie is very misunderstood and under-appreciated, in part because 20th Century Fox never really knew how to market this film at the box office. Since then it has fortunately gathered a cult following who cherish the film for what it is. A plain fun and action adventure with some wicked ideas sprinkled on top.

What can we learn by talking, endlessly, about nothing? We will continue our survey of the world according to Seinfeld with new episodes in this continuing saga. We will study the inner relationships between Jerry, George, Elaine and Kramer with particular attention to those psychological forces which motivate each of them.
We will also focus on their seemingly effortless abilities to dramatically change the moods and dialogues. Most important, we will attempt to define the existential force that guides the entire series....which is, as Jerry says, nothing.
Ed Applebaum, PhD, composer and conductor, has taught at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University and in the UH Honors College. He conducts research on depth pscyhology and the arts.

Encounter the Faustian bargains, dangerous dopplegangers, and fantastic atmospheres of Germany's golden silent film era. A fascinating, seminal, and very brief period in film history, German Expressionism was tremendously psychological in character, inspired by dreams, the subconscious and powerful symbols.
The imagery, ambience and themes of Expressionism would live on to inspire such great directors as Wells and Bergman, as well as film noir. We will view film clips and discuss The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, (pictured) Metropolis, Waxworks, and other films. A reader will be available in the bookstore.

Houston Museum of Natural Science Burke Baker Planetarium presents Force 5. Feel the Fury! Get ready to take cover when you see nature go "Force Five", from Houston Museum of Natural Science and Rice University.
Extreme weather takes center stage in this full dome animated show revealing images not seen by naked eye due to their life-threatening nature. Using real movies and NASA based images, Force Five offers the audience a vantage that would never be safe in the real world, creating a sense of what it would look and feel like if you were standing in the middle of a deadly storm.
The show begins by stepping back in time to 1900, when the great hurricane swept through Galveston, killing over 6,000 men, women, and children in one night of terror. Homes collapsed under the incredible force of torrential winds, powerful rain and rising water.
The 22-minute show then travels to Oklahoma City, where a force five tornado ripped through the town in 1999. These violent and unpredictable storms turn flying debris into lethal weapons. While only one percent of tornadoes reach this force, the Oklahoma City storm tracked wind gusts of 318 miles per hour, the fastest wind speed ever recorded on Earth. A fulldome animation then puts you into a realistic storm.
The final journey of Force Five transports the audience to the surface of the sun, where the most powerful storms in the solar system occur. The violent force of these solar events equals the energy output of a million hydrogen bombs. A coronal mass ejection can create disturbances that damage spacecraft, disrupt communications, and disable power grids here on Earth. Without the protection of Earth's magnetic field, these storms would destroy most life on the planet.

This lecture examines Kurosawa´s legacy from the perspective of globalization of politics, economy, and culture.

The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston presents Tribute to Marco Bellocchio.
One of Italy´s most talented, socially conscious, and respected directors, Marco Bellocchio (b. 1939) has been making films for almost forty years. Ranging from historical epics to family dramas, his cutting examinations of humanity and stunning natural-light cinematography make his films some of the most important work to emerge from Italy in the last half century.
"When watching a film, you have to let yourself go completely, just like you do when you´re in love. The director shouldn´t have to explain everything." —Marco Bellocchio
All films from Italy and directed by Marco Bellocchio, in Italian with English subtitles.
Schedule of Films:
Fists in the Pocket
I pugni in tasca
Directed by Marco Bellocchio
Italy, 1965
Black & White
105 Minutes
Italian with English subtitles.
Show Times:
Fri., Oct. 8 7:00 PM
Hailed in Italy as the most important debut of the decade, Bellocchio´s first film is a manifesto of youth in revolt. "Daring in the extreme, Fists in the Pocket describes a young provincial man´s (Lou Castel) annihilating rage — the very title implies pent-up teenage anger and resentment — encompassing matricide, fratricide, and incest, mocks the institutions of church and family, and generally raises hell. It dropped like a bomb on the quiet world of mid-sixties Italian cinema, still under the spell of a humanistic, postwar neorealism."—film writer Deborah Young
China is Near

Directed by Marco Bellocchio
Italy, 1967
Black & White
107 Minutes
Italian with English subtitles.
Show Times:
Sat., Oct. 9 7:00 PM
A satire about the struggle for political power focusing on the conflict between a middle-class professor running for office as a socialist and his brother, who is a Maoist.
"A masterpiece which manages the almost impossible task of using a group of thoroughly dislikable characters to produce a brilliant political comedy." —film scholar Peter Bondanella
The Conviction
La condanna
Directed by Marco Bellocchio
Italy, 1990
Color
92 Minutes
Italian with English subtitles.
Show Times:
Sun., Oct. 10 5:00 PM
A professor and his female student are accidentally locked in a museum for the night. One thing leads to another, but when the professor reveals he had the keys all along, she accuses him of rape. Co-scripted by Bellocchio´s controversial psychoanalyst, the movie is a philosophical argument posing convincing questions on the meaning of consent, power, and pleasure.
The Nanny
La balia
Directed by Marco Bellocchio
Italy, 1999
Color
106 Minutes
Italian with English subtitles.
Show Times:
Sun., Oct. 10 6:45 PM
Set in Italy at the turn of the 20th century, Bellocchio adapts a play by Italian dramatist and Nobel Prize—laureate Luigi Pirandello (1867—1936). When the birth of a child leaves a young wife depressed, the couple hires an illiterate country girl as a wet nurse. The family structure quickly disintegrates as the nanny— who left her own child and lover behind—develops a bond with the child and the father.
"One of the more satisfying films of recent years . . . a sober, unerringly controlled psychological drama about motherhood and mental frailty."—Variety
