On the second Sunday of every month at 2 p.m. (6 p.m. June through September; there is no tour in December), GHPA presents a docent-guided walking tour of an architecturally and/or historically significant area of Houston.
Sunday, September 12: The Binz
Join the Walking Tours Program as we explore one of Houston's lesser-known historic neighborhoods, The Binz. The area was developed in the 1910s and grew along with nearby Rice University; several early Rice administrators and professors built their homes here.
The Binz has included the work of some of Houston's most prominent architects, including the Georgian house that Birdsall P. Briscoe designed for businessman and statesman William L. Clayton. In the 1950s, Clayton and his wife deeded the property to the City of Houston for use as a library, and today, the restored home is part of the Clayton Library Center for Genealogical Research.
The neighborhood's pleasant streets appealed to others as well. Architects William Ward Watkin, Alfred C. Finn and Maurice Sullivan all built homes for their families here; unfortunately, only the Sullivan house remains standing today. Among The Binz's other remaining treasures is Houston's first Mormon church: Even though it's no longer used as a church and its origins are hidden by its present use, the Art Deco building remains standing.
Tickets will be sold beginning at 5:30 p.m. (please note the evening tour time for the summer) in front of the Clayton Library, 5300 Caroline St. Admission is $10 per person ($7 for GHPA members and students with valid ID), with a $2 discount for anyone who walks, bikes or takes public transportation to the tour. Free street parking is available in the area, and the tour starting point is a short walk from MetroRail's Museum District station. Reservations are not required. Restrooms will not be available.
If inclement weather threatens on the day of the tour, check the website for up-to-the-minute updates of any tour changes. You can also follow GHPA on Twitter to receive tour updates.

On Saturday, September 25, Bayou Bend celebrates the opening of our new Lora Jean Kilroy Visitor and Education Center with free family festivities from 1-5 p.m. That night, Opera Vista presents a magnificent evening concert of American music under the stars at Bayou Bend. A selection of arias will be performed, followed by Aaron Copland´s "Appalachian Spring."
Bring your own folding chair or blanket, and enjoy a memorable evening of music and beauty, a fitting conclusion to a day of Americana-themed events at Bayou Bend.
A lifelong student and patron of music, Bayou Bend founder Miss Ima Hogg envisioned her Diana Garden as—among other things—a venue for concert performances. In keeping, Bayou Bend and its gardens will serve as the backdrop for another fabulous Opera Vista production, the fourth such collaboration between the two organizations in as many years.

PR by the Book and Blue Willow Bookshop present a book signing with Racehorse adoption ranch founder Lynn Reardon, 7pm, Wednesday, October 6.
Lynn Reardon, founder and executive director of the nonprofit racehorse placement agency, LOPE (LoneStar Outreach to Place Ex-Racers), will be in Houston on Sept. 10-12 and Oct. 6th to raise awareness for LOPE and her new book Beyond the Homestretch: What I’ve Learned from Saving Racehorses.
In Beyond the Homestretch, Reardon shares her inspiring story. In 2002, she quit her Washington D.C. office job and moved to Texas to open LOPE with her husband. Since then, she has helped transition more than 750 thoroughbreds into new homes. Beyond the Homestretch presents a vivid inside look into the world of horse racing, complete with colorful horses, jockeys, trainers and gallop girls, depicting the insights horses can offer when we reevaluate our relationship with them.
“My work straddles the line between farm hand, equine psychologist, horse wrangler and kindergarten teacher – I often refer to myself as a career counselor for ex-racehorses,” says Reardon. “I see the horses as exciting, admirable ex-athletes with fully developed personalities and hidden vocations. The horses are my mentors as they continue to guide me toward fuller meaning in my own life as I help them find new careers and homes.”

Pet Psychic, Lisa Greene
Find out your pets perception of their life! Are you having behavior problems, medical issues or just want to know what's on your pet's mind? Lisa Greene, Houston's "practical" pet psychic, will be doing personal readings during PetFest. She does not just give you "fluff" (like your dog likes cheese) but answers the questions you have for your pets and gives you information you can actually use.
To read testimonials from some of her clients, please check out her website at www.petperceptions.com.
Lisa works by appointment only, so if you'd like to meet with her at PetFest, please call her at 281.497.8073 or email her at lisa@petperceptions.com to schedule your session before the event. Appointments are one hour in length and the fee is $120. Your pets do NOT have to be present for a great reading!
Pick up poop and win a prize!
How often can you potentially win a prize for being a responsible pet owner and picking up your dog's poop?! At PetFest that is actually what could happen. Pick up your dog's waste with your own or one of the poop pick-up bags that will be provided and drop it off at the Call To Doody Dog Waste Removal booth located on Gentry in front of B's Place. The Call To Doody staff will give you a raffle ticket for every bag you drop off. Then drop your raffle ticket in the bag for the prize you would most like to win. Drop off the poop and drop your raffle ticket - now that's a great deal! Winners will be drawn at after 3PM on Sunday, October 24. Need not be present to win.
Smile! You're on Candid Camera!
If you see our roving photographer, Rebecca Romo of Posh Pets Portraits, taking pictures, be sure to smile! Check her website at www.poshpetportraits.com to see if your pictures made it! You can email her at luvalldogs@earthlink.net if you would like to purchase them.

Hitting the Haunted Trails every Halloween season to make your celebrations a scream. An outdoor experience with a theme of terror! Hitting the Haunted Trails every Halloween season to make your celebrations a scream.
Killer Jack Casey has a special eye set on the Haunted Trails this October 2010 as he aims to make his own mark on this monumental 10th Anniversary - the most terrifying haunting ever to hit Houston. When Killer Casey was amongst the living, he made quite a mess of things when smart-mouths got too big for their britches. Since his controversial disappearance a decade ago, it seems his ghost still has a score to settle.
Crawling from his unknown grave, Killer Casey brings with him the marvels and monsters that nightmares are made of as he welcomes folks to dare these woods in deliverance of the most THRILLING outdoor adventure - of their LIFE!
We do not recommend that you come alone, walking alone on our Haunted Trails just may be the most terrifying experience of your life. We have a fresh cast to great you as well as the most popular nightmares of the past - hungry for fresh meat. Be prepared to be frightened as you make you way down this dark and scary trail. (And be sure and wear comfortable clothing that you don't mind getting dirty; you really are in the woods).
Click here for guidelines and policies for the Haunted Trails.
The Haunted Trails is very scary. Please understand that the show may be too intense for small children who cannot discern fantasy from reality of what appears to be happening. You certainly know your child better than anyone so we suggest you bring young children at your own discretion!!!

Welcome to Texas Seaport Museum, a project of Galveston Historical Foundation. Share the adventure of the high seas at the Texas Seaport Museum, home of the celebrated 1877 tall ship Elissa. Explore the decks of this floating National Historic Landmark which has also been designated one of America's Treasures by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Walk Elissa's decks and imagine the days when daring sailors challenged the world's oceans. In the adjacent museum and theater, witness the story of Elissa's dramatic rescue from the scrap yard and her meticulous restoration.
Located in the historic port of Galveston, the Texas Seaport Museum also tells the story of a rich legacy of seaborne commerce and immigration. Look for ancestors with a one-of-a-kind computer database containing the names of more than 133,000 immigrants who entered the United States through Galveston, "'The Ellis Island of the West"'. Join the Museum's staff and volunteers as they bring the past to life through special exhibits and educational programs.
All of Elissa and portions of the museum is open to the public at a discounted rate -
Film: Passage to Galveston: The Story of Elissa, is presented continuously onboard the Elissa. This 17-minute, award-winning documentary beautifully tells the story of Elissa's discovery, purchase and restoration. Entrance to the film is included in the Elissa admission price.
1937 Shrimp Boat Santa Maria: Gold From the Sea Exhibit
The Gold from the Sea exhibit shows the history, industry and ecology of Gulf Coast shrimping. The exhibit includes items from the 1937 Santa Maria shrimp boat owned by GHF’s Texas Seaport Museum, as well as a display of early photography of the Galveston shrimping fleet. Texas Seaport Museum is open 7 days a week from 10am-5pm.
Galveston’s the Elissa: Tall Ship of Texas
Galveston’s the Elissa: Tall Ship of Texas is a display from Kurt Voss’ book of never before published photographs. The images display Elissa’s history from her very early voyages to current programs, events and annual daysails. The pictures were chosen not only for their historical significance, but also for the quality and clarity of the photography.
In conjuncture with the photography exhibit, Jim Brink is making a new suit of sails for Elissa in the main gallery using traditional tools. Brink’s mastery of this rare trade has led him to create sails for movie, replica and historical sailing vessels, including 19 new sails for Elissa.
PIER 21 THEATER - The Great Storm
The powerful, panoramic documentary, The Great Storm, recreates the turning point in Galveston history: the 1900 hurricane. Experience the devastation of the deadliest natural disaster in United States history through eyewitness accounts, historic photographs and dramatic sound and visual effects.
A major center of commerce, with a population of 40,000 at the turn of the century, Galveston was the most important seaport in Texas and poised for greatness in the new century. Then, on September 8, 1900, came a hurricane of such fury it drove an angry ocean before it, covering the island from Gulf to Bay and laying waste to the city by the sea.
Now, in an amazing and powerful show, the story of The Great Storm has been captured for all time as a tribute to Galveston’s indomitable spirit.
Admission includes self-guided tours of the Texas Seaport Museum and Elissa, a theater presentation and access to the Galveston Immigration Database.
