Ceramicist Jane Dipaolo is featured October 9 at Winter Street Studios.

Anyone else may see clay and slush, a hot room with a glowing kiln, but when Jane Dipaolo enters her studio, she sees the tools to create classics. This Houston artist has an eye for style, quality and fashion. She creates sculptures that are as distinctive, timeless and fun as that Chanel dress she just covered up with a smock.

Classic Touch, a group show featuring Jane Dipaolo’s latest ceramics, will be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday, October 9 at Winter Street Studios, 2101 Winter Street, in the 2nd floor gallery. The event is open to the public without charge.

Dipaolo asked some of her favorite local artists to hang on the walls surrounding her sculptures, including Justin Garcia, Matt Messinger and Lindsay Peyton. Musician Alan Hawkins will also join to provide classical guitar accompaniment for the evening.

Dipaolo was born in Philadelphia and majored in art at Rowan University in New Jersey. She currently teaches art and ceramics at the Kinkaid School in Houston.

“I’m inspired by the journeys people take in their lives, the events that happen both big and small, and the unique characters you meet along the way,” she said.

    also performances by:
    Melanie Jamison
    Ayanna Jolivet Mccloud

$5 donation (all proceeds go to musicians).

    Performance: October 1, 2010, 7pm
    Installation dates: October 1 – October 9, 2010

Back to Imagined Spaces is a sound performance installation by Michelle Yom that synthesizes experiences concerning self-preservation, romanticized spirituality, and defining “the real” versus reality. Through the notion that our bodies are a common denominator that acts as an interface of human consciousness, I pose questions such as “if etheric cells of my body sing, what would it sound?”

The idea of building a pyramid began because I wished to build a chamber in which to scan my body without interruption. It was a means of self-imposed timeless space, away from the walls of my own home. This has led to creating two sets of music for the installation. The first set is a series of staccato vocalizations with syllables from the mantra, Asato Ma Sad Gamaya, processed through seven delays. The second set will be a live performance of tonal pieces titled Heart, Ears, Kidney, and Stomach, also using vocal sounds. The pieces are intended to capture a version of imaginary but prudent sounds, much like taking a microscope and focusing the lens into singing, living cells. Artist Website: http://michelleyom.com.

Melanie Jamison is an aesthetician certified by the SuperColliding Introspective Review. She recently graduated from the Illustration program at Parsons School of Design. As a student in New York, Jamison studied Indian classical vocal training in the Kirana tradition with La Monte Young and Marian Zazeela. She now independently composes electronic music and participates as an experimental vocalist and sound texture contributor as a member of the female improvisational band last referred to as Pear Prickley Pear.

Ayanna Jolivet Mccloud makes art that draws attention to the precarious, ephemeral, and soulful. She has participated in exhibitions and residencies throughout the U.S., the Caribbean, and South America. She is currently based in Houston, Texas. http://archipelaga.com.

Bering Art Collective is pleased to announce the opening of The History of Rock & Roll, Saturday, October 9, 2010, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., at the gallery, 805 Rhode Place, #500 Houston, Texas 77019. The show, featuring new works by painter John Jenkins, runs from Saturday, October 9, 2010 to Saturday, October 30, 2010.

John Jenkins brings Houston another visionary exhibition in his new series The History of Rock & Roll. Jenkins’ new works present an intricate and unique artistry of the idealized evolution of Rock & Roll. His brush strokes are palpable; deliberately ignoring the school books when translating the historical representation of Rock History. He transcribes his conceptual impressions of Rock legends and lore, amalgamating Jenkins’ intensely hypothesized interconnectedness of each canvas, hand painted electric guitars, work on paper, and denim.

John Jenkins endeavors to present an abstract history of an abstract idea and he does so brilliantly. The show is provocative and intriguing; a sight worth seeing. The exhibition’s relevance iconically begins with Jenkins’ first chord, The Tiger’s Tale/The Dragon’s Tale.

The works depict the evolutionary beginning of Rock & Roll: the fusion of European musical in#uences with roots of traditional African music. A recurring theme in The Tiger’s Tale is the presence of the “mouth,” Jenkins’ homage to storytelling; the heritage of oral tradition painted on denim cloth symbolizing the hardworking, industrious fabric of custom.

The Dragon’s Tale counters it’s former with the representation of earth and it’s sounds. The soul of Rock & Roll is symbolized herein; one can feel the African drum beat as it reverberates against the earth. The Dragon’s Tale consists of works on paper representing the spiritual aspect of sound and music. The duality of each; intense technical detail contrasted with loose lines respectively, creates the balance of North American Music; sound carried by spirit.

The second chord, the body of the exhibition, are Jenkins’ works on canvas. The evolution of ideas of Rock & Roll. Works with text and rhinestones connect idealized notions of the written word and it’s translation into sound. Follow the rhinestones in each piece and a tonal visuality will unfold.

At final, the third chord, are Jenkins’ six, meticulously hand-painted, electric guitars. Representing the physical embodiment of the “Players of Rock & Roll”; the phenomenons, musicians and songwriters. The Oracle, the first of six, the only non-Fender electric guitar, is inspired by the emerging sounds of Rock & Roll from the inception of it’s "rst musical style.

Following The Oracle, is The Maharaja, an American Fender Stratocaster, created to pay tribute to American Rock & Roll legend, Elvis Presley. The only guitar speci"cally referencing an individual and titled in Sanskrit “The Great King.”

In suite: The Laureate, (back pictured above) a Fender American Stratocaster, represents the word smith and poet; The Synesthete, a Fender American Deluxe Stratocaster, depicts the occurrence of irregular sensory perception, and the altered consciousness paralleling the LSD phenomenon of the 70s music era; The Lacemaker, a Fender American Telecaster, visions the women of Rock & Roll; and The Provocateur, a Fender American Standard Stratocaster, references the “sex, drugs, and Rock & Roll” mantra of Rock and pays homage to musical artists who pushed the envelope in their musical art form.

Jenkins’ complete body of work intricately constructs and deconstructs the multi layered dimensions of Rock’s musical genre. His intense use of imagery, allegory and metaphor are demonstrative of his complex research and understanding of his subject.

To provide in depth awareness into the musical art form, Jenkins and Bering Art Collective have partnered with Little Kids Rock and will provide a portion of exhibition sales to their organization. In addition, Jenkins was invited by Fender Guitar to paint a seventh custom Stratocaster to be given to Little Kids Rock for their annual "Right to Rock" event at the B.B. King Blues Club and Grill in New York City. The event will be held on Thursday, October 21st from 6:30 - 9:30 pm. All proceeds for this event will be used to restore and revitalize music education by putting rock n' roll instruments, innovative Little Kids Rock curriculum and materials into underfunded public schools nationwide. “Right to Rock” Event Website: http:// littlekidsrock.org/events.html.

Location:  The home of Larissa Lindsay and Stuart Bailey, 1816 Kane, Houston, TX 77007. $ Free.

VBB is an organization that has long recognized and learned from individuals who have taken risks by speaking out. This fall, VBB’s season will kick off with Women’s Voices, a new production from our much-loved living room art series that will take place in a historical 1888 Houston home located in Sixth Ward, just around the corner from the Multicultural Education and Counseling Center for the Arts (MECA).

The show will recognize the services provided by the arts center and the leadership role played by MECA’s Founding Director and latina icon, Alice Valdez, who has given voice to many Houston artists including Gwen Zepeda and Vanessa Cerda, who will both perform at the event. Like all VBB living room art productions, Women’s Voices will parallel issues of Houston neighborhoods with those in Pakistan.

This year, the production will shed light on art and community activism in Pakistan through a documentary by Sheherzad Kaleem about a grassroots Karachi-based arts organization, Tehrik-e-Niswan, led by dancer/actress Sheema Kirmani. Included in the production will be a documentary by Aisha Gazdar about Pakistan’s Women’s Action Forum, a protest group that grew during the 1980s while Pakistan was run under the US supported right-wing military dictatorship of General Zia.

The evening will feature installations by Sehba Sarwar and Yunuen Perez Vertti. Also part of the experience will be an open mic and altar, so all are encouraged to bring words and share altar art.

As always, there will be music, food, drinks, and surprises. Please join us!

This show is cosponsored by Arte Público Press, Geo TV (Pakistan), Houston Institute for Culture, Pacifica Radio KPFT 90.1 FM and Planned Parenthood of the Gulf Coast. The goal of VBB's living room art productions are to continue juxtaposing joys, struggles and successes in the US and in Pakistan.

About VBB’s Living Room Art Productions: Four years ago, under the guidance of VBB artist Oskar Sonnen, VBB began a new series called Living Room Art, an innovative approach designed to bring art directly into residential communities around Houston and beyond. Living Room Art productions are "one night stands,” open to the public and take place in private homes. The goals of Living Room Art are: to bring together disparate neighborhoods and communities; to bring together diverse populations who may not ordinarily go to a gallery/museum; and to address social issues through art.

All VBB Living Room Art shows are theme-based, multidisciplinary, and allow space for spoken word artists, writers, visual artists, performance artists, and musicians, and generally draw audiences ranging from 250-400. The shows are conceived and directed by Founding Director Sehba Sarwar with Yunuen Perez Vertti, Mark Lacy and Eric Hester.

“I feel the quality and scope of work showing well serves not only this growing campus and community but also Houston area artists and art lovers.” Gallery Director, Kris Larson said.

Faculty members Gerard Baldwin, Jay Calder, Cory Cryer, Joe Kagle, Divya Murthy, Mari Omori, Julon Pinkston, Kelly Revuelto, Kelley Eggert and Erich Schmalhorst have also donated special pieces, which will be offered for sale. These proceeds will go towards The Student Art Scholarship Fund.

In addition to this show, some instructors have future exhibitions scheduled on and off campus. Baldwin will have an unaccompanied show on campus Dec. 17-Jan. 21, 2011. Omori’s work will be shown May-August 2011 in a solo exhibition at the Pearl Fincher Museum of Fine Arts located in Spring.

Bracket: Architecture, Environment, Digital Culture, issue #1: on farming -
    Bracket
is a new book series that highlights emerging critical issues at the juncture of architecture, environment, and digital culture. Seeking new voices and design talent, Bracket is structured around an open call for entries. Conceived as an almanac, the series looks at emerging themes that are shaping the built environment in radically significant, yet often unexpected ways.

The series will chart the emergence of this current design generation. A generation raised when the internet was commonplace, when environmental issues reached a critical 'inconvenient truth,' and when the cultural capital of architecture was in need of new vision. The Bracket series will address the complex impacts of globalization on architecture, landscape, and urbanism. Bracket 1 is titled “On Farming” and looks at the capacity for architecture to address ideas and issues of productive landscapes and urbanisms. Once merely understood in terms of agriculture, today information, energy, labour, and landscape, among others, can be farmed. Farming harnesses the efficiency of collectivity and community.

Whether cultivating land, harvesting resources, extracting energy or delegating labor, farming reveals the interdependencies of our globalized world. Simultaneously, farming represents the local gesture, the productive landscape, and the alternative economy. The processes of farming are mutable, parametric, and efficient. Farming is the modification of infrastructure, urbanisms, architectures, and landscapes toward a privileging of production.

The issue collects original design projects, installations, and essays which interrogate new typologies, forms, and formats of the built environment. With almost 40 design proposals and 12 essays, “On Farming” collects emerging designers and thinkers internationally.

Edited by Mason White & Maya Przybylski.

Bracket: issue #1 on farming presented Texas Contributors Neeraj Bhatia, Jason Sowell, and Ned Dodington.

Neeraj Bhatia received his Masters of Architecture + Urban Design from MIT. He has worked for Eisenman Architects, Coop Himmelblau, Bruce Mau Design, OMA, ORG and Lateral Office and has taught at the University of Waterloo, the University of Toronto, and was most recently awarded the 2010-2011 Wortham Teaching Fellowship at Rice University. His research has been published in Volume/Archis, Thresholds, Footprint, and Yale Perspecta. He is co-editor of 'Arium: Weather + Architecture' (with Jürgen Mayer H., Hatje Cantz Publishing, 2009), which examines the relationship of building and weather. In 2008, Neeraj became a co-director of InfraNet Lab, a non-profit research collective probing the spatial byproducts of contemporary resource logistics. The Lab’s research into urban infrastructures will be published in Pamphlet Architecture 30 (Princeton Architectural Press, 2010). Neeraj received the 2010 Lawrence B. Anderson Award to document traditional and contemporary housing in the Canadian Arctic.

Jason Sowell is an assistant professor in the Graduate Program in Landscape Architecture at The University of Texas at Austin School of Architecture. His research and design work engage questions of infrastructure and measure. His projects have received several awards and have been exhibited both nationally and internationally; The University of Texas at Austin’s counterMEASURES [co-designed with Nichole Wiedemann] and Cleveland Design Competition 2007 2nd place [co-designed with Hope Hasbrouck]. He received a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Tennessee, and a Master in Landscape Architecture from Harvard's Graduate School of Design.

Ned Dodington received a B.A. in Art History from Carleton College in 2003 and an M.Arch from Rice University in 2009. While at Rice, Ned devoted his graduate career to studying potential points of architectural design intervention in biological systems. His work has been published in Architectural Design Magazine, Texas Architect, Rice Working, and the Columbia University GSAP yearly review, and he has written for The Architectural Society in New York, Manifold Magazine, and the Houstonist. His built installations have been shown in Minnesota and Houston. He has been awarded both the Technos international traveling fellowship in 2002 and the Mitchel Travel Fellowship in 2006. Ned is currently employed at PDR in Houston, Texas and manages two small businesses devoted to fostering creative communities in Houston, Caroline Collective and C2Creative.

Debuting in January 2009, Authors in Architecture is a collaboration between the Houston Public Library Downtown and the Architecture Center Houston (ArCH). Our aim is to create a dialogue between these two cultural centers and their patrons.

This series is free and open to the public.
