Family affair: Music runs in these famous families

Musical ability, to some extent, is a genetic trait. If you need to be convinced of this fact, simply look at some of the first families of music throughout history. But what exactly do we mean by “first families” of music? For purposes of this article, the term includes biologically related musicians (or, in a few cases, adopted ones) who performed together or separately, made major contributions to music, had successful careers, and earned significant awards and honors. This includes families of all sizes, from a pair of siblings or a parent and child all the way up to an entire extended family. Favor was given to acts that had lengthier careers and also to families that are larger and/or span multiple generations. There were plenty that just missed the cut, but remember: this is about first families, so it only includes the very best and most important of all time. Without further ado, here are the 20 first families of music.
